Sundali, Arritola take home wins in Backcountry Race

Sundali brothers win 16.5 mile, Arritola wins women’s 10-mile again

A perfect day for running; over 200 runners showed up to compete in the Elephant’s Perch 32nd Annual Backcountry Run on Saturday, July 21. Photo by Willy Cook

The day belonged to the Sundali brothers, but Taylor and Daniel, came in 1st and 2nd places, respectively at the 32nd Backcountry race on Saturday, July 21. The Brothers Sundali finished four minutes apart from each other as the older (Taylor, 23) took the win with a time of 1:54:28. The younger Sundali (Daniel, 20) had a time of 1:59:16. Both runners hail from Ketchum.

Returning women's champion Morgan Arritola of Ketchum once again showed her talents as she took home a win in the women's 10-mile race, while finishing 3rd overall in that category. This is Arritola's fifth consecutive Backcountry 10-mile win in her illustrious athletic career. Arritola, 26, finished with a time of 1:00:03, which shaves more time off her record-breaking performance from a year ago when she finished with a time of 1:00:31. Her 2012 time is now the new course record, which Arritola broke last year. Johanna Olson held the course record for the 10-mile women for seven years with a time of 1:02:21.

Aside from the Sundali brothers, Ryan Yates of Hailey finished fourth overall in the 16.5-mile race with a time of 2:03:26, and Richard Feldman of Ketchum finished sixth with a time of 2:05:52. Adam Greene of Ketchum ran with an excellent time as he finished eighth with a time of 2:10:48. Ted Stout from Bellevue improved on his time from a year ago with a time of 2:12:21. Last year, Stout had a time of 2:18:24.

Other notable finishers from the valley are Matt Fredback of Hailey who finished 15th overall with a time of 2:20:35, Paul Kenny from Sun Valley with a time of 2:27:17, Matt Wellner of Ketchum with 2:29:05, and Maya Lovlien of Ketchum, who was the first female finisher in the 16.5-mile race as she finished with a time of 2:35:44.

Ben Stout narrowly missed winning the 10-mile race as he came within two minutes of the winner, Gus Pelican. This is Pelican's second win in a row. Stout, however, had a very strong showing while improving his time from a year ago. Stout finished with a time of 58:45. Last year he finished with a 59:36.

Other notable finishers from the valley in the 10-mile race are David Vanderpool from Ketchum who finished fifth overall with a time of 1:01:41. Peter Webb of Ketchum finished just ahead of fellow Ketchum resident Evan Martell when Webb finished with a time of 1:05:04, and Martell finished with 1:05:17. Scott Phelan of Ketchum had a personal best as he finished with a time of 1:07:23, and Wood River grad Pedro Morales of

Hailey finished the day with 1:11:01. Angenine McCleary was the first female valley runner other than Arritola to finish with a time of 1:11:23.

Backcountry Run Results

July 21, 2012, the 32nd annual 16.5-mile and 10-mile runs sponsored by The Elephant's Perch of Ketchum. There were 84 runners completing the long course (35 female and 49 male), while 136 runners conquered the 10-mile route (80 female and 56 male), for a total of 220 runners. Of that total, 81 were local (36%), meaning that 64% came from out of the valley. And of all the runners, 20% came from outside of Idaho. Ages ranged from 13 to 82. Finishing times are listed in hours, minutes and seconds, with age listed after name. Class finishes in parentheses.
