Sports summary


32nd Backcountry Run ready to go Saturday

Save-money early registration deadline of $30 per person is Wednesday, July 18 for the 32nd annual Elephant's Perch Backcountry Run. Register at active.com or at The Perch retail store in Ketchum.

The event featuring 16.5-mile and 10-mile distances on single track trails in the Adams Gulch and Fox Creek areas is Saturday, July 21 starting at 8 a.m. from the Hulen Meadows Park three miles north of Ketchum. The challenging courses offer 3,570 of vertical feet exchanged.

You can also sign up at the Perch (at the shop only, not online) for the $40 late fee Thursday and Friday, July 19-20. There is no race day registration. Pick up race packets Friday, July 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Perch.

Last year there were 264 runners finishing led by Mike Sinnott (1.50:00) and Joelle Vaught (2.12:00) at 16.5-miles, and Gus Pelican (59:09) and Morgan Arritola (a course-record 1.00:31) at 10 miles.

Campbell runs at Eugene's Hayward Field

Competing at famed track mecca Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Hailey's Kirsys Campbell, 12, placed third in the 3000-meter run last weekend during the Track City Invitational Classic meet. Her time was 11 minutes and 44 seconds. Kirsys competed in the Midget class, and the two girls ahead of her posted the second- and third-fastest Midget times in the U.S. this year.

The daughter of Brady and DeAnn Campbell moved with her family to Hailey from Lander, Wyo. a year ago. She will enter the seventh grade at Wood River Middle School.

Before she does that, Kirsys plans to compete in two other meets. She will race this coming weekend at the Boulder Road Runner All-Comers track meet in Colorado. She will proceed from there to the 46th USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Nationals July 23-29 at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. Campbell is seeded 10th of 45 runners in her distance running class at the national competition.

Hole-in-one at Elkhorn

Elkhorn Golf Club member Carolyn Kennedy made a hole-in-one Friday, July 13 at Elkhorn's No. 6 hole, an 103-yard par 3. She used a 7-iron. Witness was Margaret Haase.

Atkinson Park youth tennis tournament results

There were 38 children in three divisions for the singles tennis tournament of the Atkinson Park Summer Youth Recreation program on Friday, July 13. Results by class:

- A Division: 1—Flynn Stewart. 2—Landon Nurge. 3—Alvaro Jiraldo.

- B Division: 1—Jenna Nurge. 2—Makenna Gove. 3—Peter De La Cruz.

- C Division: 1—Jesus Villanueva. 2—Larson Bier. 3—Patrick.

Sportsmanship awards were presented to Dakota Hutton and Kevin Myles.
