Airport to celebrate 80 years

This year marks 80 years of aircraft operations at the current site of Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey, and airport staff members said they have plans for the big anniversary.

An Airport Appreciation Day will be held on Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airport.

Airport manager Rick Baird said the event is the first such day that the airport has held for several years. The process takes a lot of planning, he said, because of the nature of airport operations.

"Any time the airfield will be involved, it requires a lot of planning," he said. "It requires a lot of work on everyone's part."

The event will feature a barbecue and other refreshments, games and music.

"Our goal at the airport is to find a way to let people who normally would not be on the operations side of the fence to do so, to see airplanes, to have hamburgers and hot dogs, and to meet people who work at the airport on a daily basis," Baird said. "It's an opportune time to say happy birthday [to the airport], but you get to be the one who enjoys the celebration."

Residents will also be able to view and possibly ride in some unique aircraft operated by private pilots, which Baird said should be a draw to the event.

"Most of us in this room believe that all airplanes are cool," Baird joked at a Friedman Memorial Airport Authority meeting earlier this month. "But there will be some pretty unique airplanes."
