Romney coming to Sun Valley

GOP candidate set to attend Aug. 3 fundraiser

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is scheduled to attend a fundraising event in the Sun Valley area on Friday, Aug. 3, a Romney campaign official announced Wednesday.

The event, for which a location has not been definitively set, will raise funds for the former Massachusetts governor's campaign to challenge President Barack Obama in the November presidential election. It is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

People wanting to attend the reception will be asked to make a $1,000 minimum contribution to the campaign. In exchange, they will have the opportunity to meet Romney and share hors d'oeuvres and cocktails.

"We're super-excited to have him back in Idaho," said Travis Hawkes, state finance chairman for the Romney campaign in Idaho. "It's pretty exciting."

Hawkes said that Romney is not scheduled to appear at any public events during his visit to the Wood River Valley. Nonetheless, the presumptive nominee for the GOP will be able to touch on issues important to Idahoans and Westerners during the private reception, he said.

"One thing that is exciting about Mitt when it comes to Idaho is that he's been here a lot and understands it well," Hawkes said.

Hawkes noted that Romney has previously hosted political rallies in Idaho and spent a summer in the Gem State as a child. Romney also held a fundraiser in the Wood River Valley last summer.

Romney has been on a fundraising blitz in recent weeks. He reportedly raised $106 million in June, compared to an estimated $71 million for Obama.

This week, Romney attended a fundraiser Wednesday in Montana and was scheduled to attend another fundraiser Thursday hosted by former Vice President Dick Cheney in Jackson, Wyo.
