New app offers guide to valley trails

Ketchum resident develops service for iPhones

By TONY EVANS

Hikers and bikers with Apple iPhones can get a handle on about 40 popular hiking and biking trails in the Sun Valley area this summer by downloading the Sun Valley Trails Application from the Apple App store.

The iPhone app uses GPS software to locate the user when cell service is available, and contains the trails, with descriptions, when service is not available.

The Sun Valley Trails App was designed by 4points LLC, a company founded by Ketchum resident Sam Young. Young is a cartographer and competitive mountain biker who said he designed the application to help locals and visitors navigate their way around the Sun Valley trail system.

The Sun Valley Trails App includes maps of many popular trails within 20 miles of downtown Ketchum, including the Croy Canyon mountain biking system near Hailey.

Three components to the app include an interactive map, which shows all the trails and where you are relative to where you want to go (with a dropped pin). The trails are listed by name and by length.

The app also provides details such as elevation profile, elevation change and directions from a present location to a chosen trailhead.

The application costs 99 cents and is only available for IOS operating systems.
