Paragliding pilot sets new standard

Covers nearly 190 miles

Matt Beechinor, a tandem paragliding pilot working at Fly Sun Valley in Ketchum, has set a new distance record.

Chuck Smith of Fly Sun Valley calls Beechinor's 190-mile ride on Saturday, June 30 "the longest foot-launched paragliding flight in the U.S.," pending verification.

Smith said that local resident Beechinor launched his paraglider from Baldy's Christmas Ridge about 11 a.m. on Saturday and landed eight-and-a-half hours later at Anaconda, Mt.—a distance of nearly 190 miles.

The previous Idaho state paragliding distance record of 148.5 miles was set by Nate Scales of Hailey, a flight that also originated on Baldy Aug. 17, 2010.

Previous-best foot-launched paragliding flight in the U.S. was 173.6 miles, flown from Jupiter, Utah Aug. 21, 2011.
