Staging the Lyle Pearson 4th of July Tennis Championships a few days before the actual holiday turned into an uptick in participation for the two-day event held June 30 and July 1 at Sun Valley Tennis Club.

The number of entries increased from 230 last year to 287 this year in the 19 different classes—and 164 players competed in the event sponsored by Atkinsons' Market, Sun Valley Resort and Lyle Pearson Motors of Boise.

"We were a little busier because of the way the holiday fell," said John Perry, who along with his brother David Perry organized the meet for nine men's classes, six women's categories and four in mixed.

Last year's runner-up Steve Marshburn of Pocatello won this year's Men's Open Singles. Men's Open Doubles winners were Anthony Hunt of Boise and Tyler Neill of Pocatello.

Although Boise-based players comprised much of the field, several Wood River Valley competitors waltzed away with first-place prizes.

Sun Valley's Peter Samway was Men's 4.5 singles champ. Julie Lynn-Wendy Cairncross of Ketchum captured Women's 3.5 doubles in split sets.

In Women's 4.0 Doubles, Trish Quarles and Amy Bailey of Boise were winners. Quarles is the wife of former Wood River High boys' basketball coach Roger Quarles.
