Bikers stoked for Baldy XC course

At USA Cycling Nationals

Local mountain bikers are psyched about the new amateur single-loop course for the 2012 USA Cycling National Mountain Bike Championships July 5-7 at the Sun Valley Resort.

The Zions Bank National Championship course is guaranteed to give bikers a true mountain biking experience, said a May 30 press release from Visit Sun Valley and Sun Valley Marketing Alliance.

Amateurs will circumnavigate Bald Mountain via Cold Springs, Warm Springs and the River Run trails. There is 3,000 feet of climbing over the 20-mile course that features ample passing and great descents.

Starting and finishing like last year's amateur cross-country race in the River Run Lodge area, the 2012 single-track course will travel clockwise around Sun Valley's principal ski mountain.

It will race down the Big Wood River then climb up Cold Springs and wrap around to the Warm Springs side of Baldy. From there racers will climb up Maiden Lane to the Sunset Strip before swooping down the River Run descent to the finish.

Practice runs take place today, Wednesday, July 4. All age groups of the Category 2 and 3 amateur divisions have their race on the afternoon of Thursday, July 5. The Singlespeed, Cat. 1, Masters and Women racers compete Saturday, July 7, also in the afternoon.
