American skating king Abbott stars in ice show

Saturday’s Sun Valley on Ice

This season's Sun Valley on Ice 10-show series of performances kicks off today, Wednesday with the Independence Day holiday show featuring Ryan Bradley and Nathan Chen.

Sun Valley also offers a bright American star Saturday, July 7 when three-time U.S. figure skating champ Jeremy Abbott headlines the second ice show of the season, starting at 9:45 p.m. on the outdoor rink.

Abbott, 27, from Aspen, Colo. placed ninth in the 2010 Olympics and eighth in the 2012 world competition. This year, he has proved capable of commanding the international attention that Evan Lysacek did at the top of his game.

Last January, Abbott rose to the occasion during the 2012 U.S. Nationals at San Jose, Ca. by posting the highest-ever free skate score of 273.58 points at a national championships. Only two-time world champ Patrick Chan, 21, of Canada has posted a better free skate, 280.98.

Abbott opened his free skate with a quad toe and was the only man to successfully do a quad at nationals. He is known as one of the most technically sound skaters, with beautiful edges and body control.

Tickets are now on sale at the Sun Valley Recreation Office, 622-2135. Tickets may be purchased online at seats.sunvalley.com. All seating is reserved and advance reservations are recommended. You can also buy tickets at the gate before the shows.

Meantime, 1998 Olympic men's skating king Ilia Kulik, 35, from Newport Beach, Ca. is the newly-announced headliner of the Aug. 11 show with up-and-coming U.S. star Courtney Hicks from Chino Hills, Ca.
