Summer

It's been a beautiful, sunny, windy week here in the Wood River Valley. The sun bakes down upon us and the wind goes through us, creating an exhilarating effect. What a gorgeous summer it has been, thus far. And now, here comes the Fourth of July weekend. Whoa! Not so. Wait. It doesn't fall on a Friday or Monday this time. The Fourth is on Wednesday. Now what? No long weekend this year?

If you have vacation days coming, I imagine that you'll probably take Thursday, the 5th, and Friday, the 6th, off in order to make it a super long weekend. If you don't have time off coming, you're shafted pure and simple but at least it will break up the workweek. Unless, of course, you own your own business or are employed by a tourist-orientated one as many of us are. Then, one must work straight through the week because the tourist dollars are there ready to be spent. Get it while you can, right?

Now, if you're retired, you're free all week. However, if your portfolio sucks like mine, you're still free—free to turn off your phone so you'll miss those creditors' calls. Such is the state of the valley as we ready for another American holiday.

Somehow, this summer, it just doesn't matter, for it's the brightest, warmest time of the year. No matter what your financial situation is, this pleasant weather has a way of restoring our souls. The natural beauty of the Wood River Valley in a particularly wonderful season makes us forget about our problems. It's a time to get outside and have fun. You remember what fun was, don't you? I'm all about having fun. How about you? It's summer!
