A 24-year-old Hailey woman has been charged with five misdemeanor crimes for allegedly stealing about $300 worth of grocery and pharmacy items from Atkinsons' Market in Hailey and hitting an Atkinsons' employee in the head with a beer bottle.

Following her arrest Monday afternoon, Ashley N. Prior remained incarcerated Thursday in the Blaine County jail on $25,000 bond.

She was arraigned Tuesday in Blaine County Magistrate Court on misdemeanor charges of petit theft, battery, resisting or obstructing officers, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hailey police Lt. Steve England said the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Monday when Prior allegedly left Atkinsons' with shoplifted items stuffed in bags and in her coat. A female store employee followed Prior and was allegedly struck with a beer bottle when she confronted Prior in an alley near the intersection of Main and Croy streets.

England said Prior was found shortly after in a nearby business and attempted to flee out a back door but was arrested instead.

England said there were numerous witnesses to the confrontation.

"We had quite a few people helping us," he said. "With the help of witnesses, we were able to find her in a short time."
