MOUNTAIN BIKE NATIONALS at SUN VALLEY

Scott Sports will host Baldy bike downhill on July 1

Ride Sun Valley has announced that Scott Sports will present the Shimano Baldy Super Duper Downhill race Sunday, July 1 at 3 p.m. down Warm Springs. Practice occurs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

It is the first event of the 2012 USA Cycling National Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championships on Baldy. It is the only event of the July 1-8 competition that won’t be staged through Sun Valley Co.’s River Run Plaza.

Staging area will be the Warm Springs side of Baldy, finishing in Picabo Street in front of Apple’s Bar & Grill.

Riders will start from the top of Baldy and drop more than 3,000 vertical feet on a flowy and loopy downhill journey. For the first-time race, you will need a bike that can descend as well as climb, organizers said.

It is the second race in the Sun Valley All-Mountain Competition that combines the June 30 Galena Grinder cross-country race and the July 3 Fat Tire Criterium. By entering all three, riders will vie for bragging rights as the best all-around rider during this year’s Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival.

Should riders decide to skip the Fat Tire Criterium, they will be docked two minutes from their overall times recorded in the Grinder and Super Duper. If they race and finish the Fat Tire Crit, they will earn a two-minute time bonus toward their all-around times.

Overall honors will be awarded to the top men and women in these categories: Under 18, Over 18, Categories 1-3 and Professional.
