Happy 40th birthday, SNRA

Sun Valley Guide on newsstands now

Ed Cannady’s image of star tracks across the White Cloud mountains graces the cover of the summer issue of Sun Valley Guide magazine.

Sun Valley Guide magazine celebrates the Wood River Valley's favorite playground this summer, featuring in its current issue a comprehensive article on the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, which turns 40 this August.

Former Idaho Mountain Express Assistant Editor Greg Stahl contributes a fascinating, in-depth article that explores how the efforts of a handful of Idaho men to stop the destruction of Castle Peak in the White Cloud Mountains led to the creation of the Gem State's crown jewel.

SNRA Backcountry Recreation Manager Ed Cannady, whose stunning images of the wild country illustrate Stahl's piece, also provides the ultimate insider's guide to the area, complete with maps, tips and highlights of must-do activities.

Continuing the theme of the marvelous mountains to our north, Dick Dorworth offers a profile of legendary climber Paul Petzoldt, who began his career in the Sawtooth Mountains, and outdoor sports photographer Mark Weber gives a detailed account of climbing the little-known, but classic climb of Petzoltdt Couloir on Mount Heyburn.

While the SNRA's 40th birthday is clearly the biggest event of the summer, there's a little deal going on across the pond this July that might catch the attention of some valley residents. Jennifer Liebrum profiles the Wood River Valley's biggest Olympic hope, dressage champion Adrienne Lyle, and Rebecca Meany gets the lowdown on the gear from here that has a chance of helping the USA secure a few gold medals over there in the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Other topics in this summer's edition of the magazine include a rundown of the valley's best local brews, perfect family hiking trails, gear recommendations from locals who know their stuff, and an interview with Sun Valley Writers' Conference attendee and Ketchum native Aneurin (Nye) Wright on his unusual and thought-provoking comic book for the dead and dying.

Pick up a copy of the magazine at news racks throughout the valley.
