Junior golf in the Wood River Valley was the winner Sunday when the 15th annual Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament was staged for 26 foursomes and 106 players at Sun Valley Resort Golf Course.
The tournament raised funds for the C. Gates Youth Endowment and Atkinson Park junior golf program.
Endowment president Roger Roland said this year's tournament netted $5,000.
During the tournament the board members presented a $2,500 check to John Kearney Jr. of the Atkinson Park Recreation Department. Over 12 years the junior golf program has received over $20,000 from Gates tournament proceeds.
Other donations included $10,000 from Woody Stuart and $2,500 from Mark Gates, the brother of Chuck Gates.
Stuart developed a love of golf in part by playing the game with his close friend Chuck Gates. For many years he has donated money to the Endowment Fund through the Dwight Stuart Youth Foundation.
The Stuart family, headed by milk industrialist Elbridge Stuart, founded the Carnation evaporated milk business in Washington State in 1899.
This year's low gross winners with a 56 at Sun Valley Sunday were Dave Demkovich, Carl Geissinger, Matt Meador and Gardiner Young.
Winning the Gates Flight with a net score of 57 were Rob Hogan, Dale Deputy, Brent Bethers and Chris Hopkins.
Long drive winners were Derek Holladay and Jennifer Harper. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Olin Glenne, Jennifer Harper, Walter Littenberg, Marcia Rankin, Bob Buchanan, Kimberly Ellwanger and Eugene Holman.
The tournament is named for Chuck "C." Gates, who died Dec. 6, 1997 in Nevada at age 51. A passionate golfer, Gates started Ketchum's first radio station, KRMR, and was a co-founder of the Idaho Mountain Express newspaper.
