Complex prepped for fire training

Departments to conduct exercise in West Ketchum on Saturday

By EXPRESS STAFF

The Ketchum Fire Department will conduct fire-training exercises this weekend at the Bavarian Village apartments in West Ketchum.

Over the past few weeks, firefighters have been practicing skills such as performing rescues, raising ladders and pulling lines to fight imaginary fires.

"Next weekend, the firefighters won't have to pretend anymore—they'll get to fight the real thing," said senior Lt. Tory Frank.

Frank said the buildings' owner, TBD LLC, donated the buildings for the department's training activities.

The Ketchum Fire Department, along with firefighters from neighboring departments, will conduct the live fire training exercise at 154 Bird Drive on Saturday, on June 16. The training exercise will start at about 8:30 a.m. and will last about seven hours.

"This training is very valuable to our firefighters as it allows them to practice their firefighting skills under the extreme conditions of fire in a controlled manner," Frank said.

She said the department does not plan to burn the buildings to the ground and will only use clean combustibles. However, smoke will result from the burn, so neighbors are advised to keep doors and windows closed during the exercise.

"We invite the public to come watch your local firefighters in action," Frank said.
