More increases in Ketchum LOT

Retail gains, lodging sector struggles

By REBECCA MEANY

There's still plenty of pain to go around, but good news continues to trickle out of Ketchum as the city's local-option tax receipts posted gains for the eighth straight month this fiscal year.

Ketchum charges a 2 percent sales tax on lodging and by-the-glass liquor sales, and a 1 percent tax on retail sales and building materials. Because the tax is imposed on the city's main business categories, it's seen as one way to gauge the health of the local economy.

May receipts, representing transactions in April, were up 7.4 percent, or $5,668, over the same month last year.

The largest category, retail, showed a 9.42 percent increase, taking in $4,854 more than the previous May. Retail is up almost 8 percent for the fiscal year, which began Oct. 1.

Liquor receipts saw a 14.26 percent, or $1,347, increase. The category is up more than 5 percent in fiscal year totals.

Building materials also improved, posting a nearly 16 percent increase, or $1,704 more. That category has a fiscal year total increase of .88 percent, following dramatic fluctuations over the past eight months.

Room receipts declined 8.82 percent, or $175. That category has seen ups and downs, but mostly downs, this fiscal year. Its fiscal year total is down by 7.39 percent.

Condominium receipts plummeted by 72 percent, representing a $2,062 drop compared with last May. A few months of solid numbers brings the category up by nearly 4 percent in fiscal year totals.

In all categories combined, receipts so far this fiscal year are up 6 percent, or $63,473, over the same period last year.
