Golfers take aim in match play finals, Pro-Am

At Valley Club, Sun Valley

Wood River Valley golf courses were busy with high-quality competition last week.

The Valley Club staged the Idaho Golf Association's Match Play Championships Friday through Sunday, June 1-3.

And Sun Valley and Elkhorn golf courses were the sites of the Rocky Mountain Section PGA Snake River Chapter Pro-Am golf tournament May 29-30.

Match Play finals

Long-hitting Jimmy Burnett, a Challis homebuilder and 2006 Challis High graduate, won the IGA Men's Match Play championship Sunday 5&4 over Todd Points of Boise.

Burnett, 23, is having a good spring, having won the Southeast Idaho Amateur by seven strokes May 6 at Riverside Municipal Golf Course, Pocatello.

In Sunday's semi-finals Burnett defeated on the 19th Jesse Hibler, 34, of Boise, a former Brigham Young University golfer. Points made it to the final 6&5 over Chris Reinke, 33, an Ashton golfer from North Fremont High and Memphis University. Reinke was last year's IGA runner-up.

There were 30 golfers in the men's match play bracket including Albert King of The Valley Club and Hailey's Matt Meador. Meador won 3&2 over Darren Kuhn before falling 5&4 to Hibler in the quarterfinals.

Last weekend's IGA meet included a Women's Flight won by Boise's Sheryl Scott 2&1 over Mountain View High and College of Idaho golfer Baylee Borchers. Norris Dancer, 60, of Star took Senior Men 2-up over Boise banker Joel Hickman. Dancer, last year's Match Play runner-up, edged local Chuck Conn 4&3 in the semi-finals.
