Mary Cathern (Bishop) Kohler

Mary Cathern (Bishop) Kohler, 95, of Boise and Bellevue died Wednesday, May 23, at the Lincoln County Care Center in Shoshone of natural causes.

Mary was born July 24, 1916, in Boise. She grew up in Boise and attended the Boise schools. She married Walter J. Kohler on Sept. 24, 1935, in Hailey. She moved to Bellevue at 18, where she lived most of her life. To the community she was known as Cathern.

She worked for Pete Graff and John Brown at the store where Glenn's Grocery used to be. Afterward she worked for the Blaine County School District for about 30 years in the kitchen at Bellevue Elementary. She retired in the late 1970s to care for her husband, Lloyd Bishop.

Cathern was an avid fisherwoman and huntress. She enjoyed sitting on the bank of the lake reeling in as she said "the big one." She also loved to cook—making donuts was one of her favorites with her kitchen full of donuts. She would call friends and family to stop by and get them by the dozen.

She was extremely active in the community. She was president in the PTA and active in other school functions, served as The Nobel Grand in the Mayflower Rebecca Lodge as well as a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She was a member of Awana's Club, attended Bellevue Community Church and was a Sunday school teacher.

Cathern will be missed by many in the community as well as friends afar.

The family would like to thank Lincoln County Care Center for all its help and service. We couldn't have done it without you.

The surviving family includes daughters Elva M. Kincade and her daughter, Mary (Kincade), Calhoun of Bellevue Idaho, Johanna (Jody) F. Brodway (Jim Brodway) and their children, Trever Pooler and Robin (Pooler) Noyes-Chris of Bremen, Ga.; Mike Barratt (Iris), Muriel (Barratt) Gough, Tom Barratt Jr. (Jeannett); and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Alice Fern Bishop; husband, Walter J. Kohler; son, Walter J. Kohler Jr., and daughter, Ersel I. (Kohler) Barratt; siblings, Walter Dilkes, Mabelle D. Maus, Harold Bishop, Anna B. Jensen, Laurana (Beany) Smith, Lucille B. Tolman, Patricia B. Wood.

Memorials suggested to Lincoln County Care Center, 511 E. Fourth St., Box 830, Shoshone, Idaho 83352.

There will a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Bellevue Cemetery with Rev. Thad Walton, Bellevue Community Church, officiating.

Services are under the care of Wood River Chapel. Family and friends are invited to visit www.woodriverchapel.com to share memories.
