Middle school gridders aim for All-Star game

June 30 in Twin Falls

Remember the impressive and undefeated 6-0 season of the Wood River Middle School seventh-grade football team that ended last October?

The Wolverines outscored opponents 236-6 and put together such a successful attack that they never punted all year.

Six players from that team have been selected by to play for Team Idaho in the first annual 7th Grade Idaho All-State Football Game and Camp Saturday, June 30 in Twin Falls.

The game matching Team Idaho and Team Treasure Valley will be played at Canyon Ridge High School. Players will stay in the dorms at College of Southern Idaho for three days and will practice prior to the game in a camp coached by college coaches and players. heard about the success of the WRMS team and requested game film in February from coaches Chris Malmgren and Rob Swanson along with their recommendations for four players. After seeing the films, the selection committee chose four players and added two other Wolverine All-Stars.

The Wolverine players selected were:

Brendan Bingham, offensive line; Jens Blackman, defensive line; Tor Dalzell, offensive line; Owen Gifford, safety and linebacker, and running back; Ashton Owens, safety, linebacker and running back; and Travis Swanson, linebacker and fullback.

Helping defray the cost of $400 per player to participate in the practice camp/game have been the following local business and families as sponsors:

21st Century Manufacturing Solution, LLC; Hailey Coffee Co.; McClain's Pizzeria; Shorty's Diner; Street Masonry; Sun Valley Brewery; Blackburn family; Julie and Jack Flolo; Barbara and Jim Figge; Devra and Scott Mary; Melissa and Jim Thies; and the families of the players.
