Memorial Day weekend

It's Memorial Day weekend, and because of that we all look to the skies for rain. However, this has been one of the loveliest months of May we've experienced in recent years. Notoriously, May and June signaled the "monsoon season." And yet, campers from all over the world would gather in the Sawtooths to sit in their RVs and squat in their tents and witness the downpour. Other hardy souls would actually attempt to go on hikes and get tangled up in the high-water creeks. Much to the annoyance of the forest trail crews, motorcyclists would challenge closed roads, tear them up and leave deep ruts for the rest of the year, spoiling many adventures for others.

As I write this, the sun is emerging from the cloud cover. Maybe this is the signal for the start of a new trend—the perfect, dry Memorial Day holiday weekend and kickoff for our summer camping season in fine fashion. This weekend, campers and hikers could actually get outside and explore the beauty of our forests instead of watching blank TVs in their RVs or solving damp crossword puzzles in their tents. They could roast hot dogs or sides of beef on their campfires instead of settling for moist sandwiches and Spam.

On the other hand, many people, like myself, love the rain. It's soothing to watch and comforting to hear on the roof of your home in bed laden with three or four animals. The rain causes the air to smell fresh as it cleanses Mother Earth. Don't you feel better after a shower in the morning?

Whatever happens, it's a three-day weekend, a time to relax and ease into the summer for all Wood River residents. Wet or dry, we're all so lucky to live here.
