Overall 3200m records set at 4A track meet

WRHS track athletes compete


Wood River High School track and field athletes posted a number of personal bests but few significant point-getting efforts during the United Dairymen of Idaho's 95th annual Idaho Track and Field Championships last weekend.

At Middleton High School, the Wolverine girls placed 22nd of 23 schools in the State 4A meet with four points. The Hailey boys were 23rd of 24 schools with six points in the Idaho High School Activities Association meet Friday and Saturday.

In team totals, the Bishop Kelly girls (127 points—38 relays, 41 distances) won their second team championship in three years and sixth overall over defending champion Jerome (86 points—30 relays).

Bishop Kelly senior Emily Nist set a new overall state record in 3200-meter run at 10:45.66, beating the three-year-old former record by over five seconds. Twin Falls senior Erik Harris also set a new overall 3200m boys' record at 9:04.13, over two seconds better than the 12-year-old previous mark.

The 4A boys' team winner was Rigby for the third straight year with 79 points (48 field) over Skyview of Nampa (71, winner of three relays. In other classifications at state track:

- 5A—The Mountain View girls won their second straight title 106-71 over Coeur d'Alene, and the Rocky Mountain boys captured their second straight crown 133.5 to 120.5 over 2010 state champion Eagle.

- 3A—Sugar-Salem's girls took their fourth state title in six years 88-77 over Weiser, and the Payette boys won their fourth title in eight years 93.5 to 73 over Kimberly's Bulldogs.

- 2A—The Gooding girls won their first-ever state track championship 86.5 to 77 over Nampa Christian, while Kamiah claimed its first title since 2002 and sixth overall by a 111-84 margin over Declo.

Here are Wood River's state results from Middleton:

4th—Ben Stout 1600m (4:33.26).

5th—Cheyenne Swanson shotput (36-2.25).

8th—Ben Stout 800m (1:59.99, personal best).

10th—Chase England 3200m (9:56.33, personal best).

12th—Corrine Smith 1600m (5:39.42).

17th—Jade Atkinson 3200m (12:55.28, personal best by 40 seconds).
