Carey High School senior Charlie Rivera and Camas County senior Katelyn Peterson came away with gold medals during the State 1A track and field meet Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High School in Meridian.
Rivera won the triple jump by nearly a foot with a leap of 42-10. One year ago, he was 10th in the state triple jump at 39-6. But Rivera brought his "A" game to track this year and amassed 18 of Carey's 36 team points with his second place in long jump at 19-10.25 Friday.
With the 36 points, Carey tied Oakley and Idaho City for fourth place in the final boys' team standings and brought a trophy back from state track.
Peterson finished a remarkable high school track and field career with gold medals in the triple jump and high jump at Mountain View. She added a second place in long jump and fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles for 33 points.
She finished her track career with seven gold medals and 114 individual points. This year, Peterson set the 1A class record Friday with the winning 37-1 triple jump—her third straight triple jump title and a winner by nearly three feet.
In the high jump, Peterson knocked her head on the bar and was checked for a concussion, but finished the meet with her third state high jump title at 5-5. She holds the 1A classification record of 5-7 set in 2011.
Unfortunately, the Camas Musher girls ended up two points shy of carrying home a state team trophy for finishing in the top four of the 33 1A teams at state. Camas placed fifth with 42 points, two points behind Timberline-Weippe.
The State 1A girls' team champions were the Challis Vikings (62 points) over Liberty Charter (55). Challis basically won its title on the basis of 23 points in the pole vault. The Vikings added 26 in the sprints and nine in relays.
Carey's girls (38 points) got 17 from junior distance runner Jaide Parke (2nd 3200m, 4th 1600m and 5th 800m) and seven more from senior Micaela Adamson (5th triple jump, 6th 300m intermediate hurdles). Carey had 14 more relay points and ended up in eighth place.
Tying for first place in the 37-team boys' race with 45 points a piece were 2009 champion Liberty Charter and North Gem of Bancroft. North Gem won its first-ever state title on the backs of three seniors—Tyler McLain (19 points sprints), discus winner Quentin Van Pelt and Kendall Lloyd.
The Camas County boys got a couple of silver medals from their 4x400m relay team and senior Andrew Simon (high jump) to finished ninth with 33.5 points. The Musher medley relay squad finished third.
Richfield senior Sasha Kent swept the state distance races—taking the 800m by six seconds, the 1600m by four seconds and the 3200m by 25 seconds. She also swept the three races in 2011 and ended with six golds.
