Woodside floodplain map revised

Insurance refund information available at Hailey City Hall

Due to changes in mapping methods at a federal level, about 300 Woodside residents were sent shopping for flood insurance in spring 2010. But thanks to efforts by Sweetwater Community and the city of Hailey, federal officials agreed to change the floodplain maps back to their original configuration. As a result, many homeowners will be eligible for refunds on any insurance premiums paid as a result of the map changes.

The new insurance requirements have cost homeowners $300 to several thousand dollars per year, depending on where a home is situated in the Woodside subdivision. Affected homeowners were advised of the new premiums through letters from their home mortgage lenders.

The change stemmed from a floodplain map change based on a Federal Emergency Management Agency flood insurance study conducted in 2010 for Blaine County.

"The city has successfully applied for a FEMA Letter of Map Revision to correct errors made on the 2010 revision of the FEMA flood maps," wrote county Floodplain Administrator Jim Zarubica in a news release Friday. "The floodplain boundary has been moved back to the approximate location of the line prior to the 2010 flood map revision. Most of the properties that were previously out of the floodplain that we put in the floodplain as a result of the 2010 remapping are now out and are eligible for a refund for any insurance policies required by lenders."

Zarubica said in an interview that more information and copies of supporting documents to provide to lenders and insurance agents to obtain a refund can be obtained by calling him at 788-9830, ext. 17.
