Slanetz, David win seats on Ketchum City Council

Charles Friedman loses by one vote

Jim Slanetz and Michael David have won seats on the Ketchum City Council, following a close election Tuesday that saw the runner-up, Charles Friedman, lose by one vote.

The election was called to determine two council seats. Five contenders vied for the positions: Slanetz, David, Friedman, Mickey Garcia and Julie Lynn.

The special election was held because Ketchum voters in November rejected an initiative to change the city's form of government from a "strong mayor" system to a council-manager system. At the same time, the seats of councilmen Curtis Kemp and Larry Helzel were up for election.

Under state law, if such an initiative fails, the concurrent vote for council members is deemed void. The statute also states that a new election must be held to determine the two council seats that would have been decided had that initiative not been on the ballot.

Neither of the incumbents decided to seek re-election. Helzel stepped down from his post last winter and was replaced by interim appointee Friedman. Kemp has remained on the council but determined that he would not run again.
