Ramp up the Mr. Wolverine contest

After the elegant Footlight Dance Centre ballet and dance production last weekend, the same Community Campus theater in Hailey will be the staging area of a little counter-programming action tonight.

Wood River High School Student Union advisor and English teacher Stephanie Spindler said "eight fabulous" high school boys are entered in this year's Mr. Wolverine contest today, Wednesday, May 16.

The performance is at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Campus auditorium. Admission is $5.

Spindler said boys competing are: Hayden Thayer, Alec Poster, Michael Flolo, Riley Beck, Sam Brown, River Curtis, Cutter Grathwohl and Trevor Norris. Nicknames for the contestants run the gamut from "Cowboy Beck" to "White Chocolate" and "The Slayer."

Money raised will be used to support school activities such as dances and Homecoming.

Sponsored by Student Union, the show will have a 1970s throw-back theme including talent, a quick question and an opening dance number. The boys will be auctioned off to the highest bidder for a pizza and bowling date.

Durance riders excel in time trials

The Ketchum-based Durance-Colnago cycling team traveled to Boise to race in the Idaho Time Trial Festival sponsored by Bob's Bicycles May 11-12.

Now in its fifth year, the festival consisted of three time trials in less than 18 hours. They were a Bogus Basin Road Prologue Hill Climb, a 20-kilometer or 41k time trial and a non-aero sprint 8k time trial.

Traditionally Durance-Colnago racers have done well and 2012 was no exception.

Participants included World and Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong, current Master¹s World and National time trial champion Richard Feldman and five-time Master's National time trial champion Patty Puz.

When the racing was done, Feldman and Nate Galpin of Durance-Colnago stood atop the podium as overall champions—Feldman in the Master's 35 class and Galpin in Category 4.

Other successful performances came from Puz (3rd/Women's Cat. 3-4) and John Swyers (6th/Master's 55+). Puz bettered her times in all events compared to 2011.

On the final 8-kilometer course with an uphill finish, Feldman turned in an 11:23 time for first-place overall, and also the course record. Galpin (12:12) took his category. Puz clocked 17:18 and Swyers 14:51.
