It’s a razor-thin margin in rodeo race

Taylor reclaims slim lead

They say close only counts in horseshoes. If so, there are three young women in the 5th District high school rodeo ranks who are so close that a leaner or two could be decisive.

After four circuit rodeos and with only one remaining, just five points in the all-around standings separate three former district champions—Wood River High School senior Haillie Taylor, Valley High senior Valene Lickley and Glenns Ferry senior Darby Fox.

They'll decide the season title during the district finals rodeo May 25-26 in Gooding.

Wood River's Taylor, the 2009 overall winner as a freshman, reclaimed the season lead during last weekend's rodeo at Carey's Blaine County Fairgrounds. It's a razor-thin margin over 2010 winner Lickley and defending champion Fox.

Taylor added 52 points to her total at Carey and has 228 points on the season. Goat tying/breakaway roping leader Lickley tacked on 44 points and now has 226. Pole bending leader Fox enjoyed a 58-point weekend at Carey and has 223 for the year—just five behind.

Consistent all the way across the board, Taylor has built her slim lead without leading any of her five events, although she is second in barrel racing with 59 points behind rookie Bailey Gough of Gooding—and tied for second in breakaway and pole bending.

At Carey, Taylor won Saturday's second go-round of breakaway roping with an 8.55-second time. The Wood River girls' basketball defensive star had pulled down seven points in breakaway Friday at 10.280 seconds—on a night when Fox (2.860 seconds) and Lickley (2.950) nailed their rides.

She collected 14 more points with fourth-place pole bending rides of 21.630 seconds Friday and 21.549 seconds Saturday. Five other points came from Haillie's sixth-place team roping finish with partner Pete McGregor of Jerome Saturday.

Fox won both pole bending go-rounds at Carey, and had 1-3 finishes in goat tying.

Next up: The Carey stop at Blaine County Fairgrounds is Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m.

Circuit rookie Kylie Castle of Carey School (30 points) added three points to her season total with a ninth-place 12.930-second goat tying result and a 10th-place pole bending time of 23.420 Friday. Carey senior Taylor Castle earned two points in Saturday's barrel racing at 18.996 seconds.

In the boys' all-around race, Gooding's Brogan Bennett (145 points) posted a 39-point weekend at Carey to slice his way into the season-long lead of Jared Parke of Gooding (157). They are neck-and-neck in calf roping, leader Parke with 63 points and Bennett with 61.
