It was quite a weekend for Sawtooth United F.C. youth soccer teams at the 118-team Canyon Rim tournament Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6. Nine of the 11 SUFC Competitive Program teams competed in Twin Falls' biggest-of-the-year youth soccer gathering.
Here are some highlights for each team from Twin Falls.
The spring season draws to a close May 18-20 at the Idaho Youth Soccer Association's Director's Cup in Boise and the IYSA Idaho State Cup over Memorial Day, at Boise's Simplot Sports Complex:
( U-10 boys: Went 1-2-0 during their first tournament of the season, at Twin Falls. Coaches Sally Gerlach and Margo Ros were thrilled with the team's effort. The boys improved each game. SUFC played a strong, consistent game on a cold and windy Saturday and defeated the Diamondbacks 5-1. They lost 2-0 to Nova Pele and made it to the Sunday semi-finals, where they battled against an outstanding Boise Nationals Galaxy side and dropped a 7-0 decision.
( U-11 boys: Coach Trent Stumph commended the boys for their exceptional individual and team play in all three tournament games. The team went 1-2-0, winning their American B Bracket consolation final over Pocatello Knuckleheads in a shoot-out after drawing at the end of regulation.
( U-13 boys: The boys (1-1-1) won their first match against Extreme 2-0. Peter Wolter and Michael Madsen scored. The defense played well in a new formation, holding Idaho Rush Swoosh to a 0-0 tie—an improvement over a recent 3-0 loss to the same side. Again playing great soccer Sunday and keeping Twin Falls Rapids scoreless in the flow of play, SUFC fell 1-0 when the Rapids converted a penalty kick.
( U-14 boys: The boys played at a high caliber for longer stretches than they have yet played in Boise League games. Making it to the semi-finals at Twin Falls, the team (1-1-1) was pleased with its overall experience. They won their first game 2-1 over PVSC. Jack Dwyer and Keegan Whitelaw found the back of the net and Danny Graves generated strong offensive play out of the midfield. Next, SUFC played to a 1-1 tie with Idaho Rush Swoosh. Whitelaw provided his second goal of the day with the strong offensive support of Yuri McClure and Drew Kaminski. Playing well in goal was keeper Tom Gillespie with the strong defensive play of Joey Reidy, Garrett Rawlings, and Emmitt Stevens. SUFC met strong opposition in Sunday semi-final, falling 4-0 to Boise Nationals. Noteworthy were strong defensive play by Jacob Truxal and Carter Ros, and Jack Seiller's goal.
( U-16 boys: In its first match, SUFC (1-1-1) had a physical game with Idaho Rush. Rush went ahead 1-0 on a PK, but SUFC equalized on a Jose Oritz goal before ultimately falling 2-1. Next was a 1-0 draw with PVSC. Injuries and sickness depleted SUFC Sunday taking on the group winners Twin Falls Rapids in a 3-0 loss. The boys fought to the end behind strong play of Eron Bates, John Scott, Bobby Corker and Roger Figge.
( U-12 girls: The girls (1-2-0) played three close games in Twin Falls—losing 2-1 to a strong Idaho Rush side, rallying for a 3-2 victory over Nevada SWAT and falling 1-0 to Nampa Fuego. Coaches said the girls played great, improving their play with each game.
( U-14 girls: SUFC (1-0-3) had plenty of highlights in round-robin divisional play. The scores were 1-1 (goal Jesse Cole) vs. Idaho Rush, 2-0 (goals Jesse Cole, Sage Rheinschild) vs. Mountain Home, 2-2 (goals Jesse Cole and Autumn Fluetsch, assist Lilly Jenner) vs. PVSC Edge, and 0-0 vs. Elko Indar. Goalkeeper Olivia Ott and the defensive back line of Sam Busby, Pilar Pennell, Kate Rathfon, and Caitie Sfingi played very well only surrendering 2 goals during the run of play. Ashley Carnduff, Jesse Cole, Hanna Conn, Autumn Fluetsch, and Maggie Sfingi did very well in the midfield. Up top, Lilly Jenner contributed a tireless effort alongside Sage Rheinschild and Emily Siegel. Riley Boice and Alina Svidgal also contributed.
( U-16 girls: Also playing over the May 5-6 weekend were the U-16 girls for two games in Saturday Boise League. In a challenging start, the girls had their best performance yet in their first match against Neto United—posting a shutout. They played valiantly later in a loss to a more competitive Neto United-Jose team.
