It was a first-ever district championship for the Camas County High School girls' track and field team from Fairfield when the 4th District 1A meet for 15 schools was staged Friday and Saturday at Jerome.

Led by senior Katelyn Peterson's 40-point performance, the Mushers parlayed their 69.5-point field effort into a very slim 108.5 to 108 victory over the Oakley Hornets. Peterson won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump for four golds.

Peterson has the top state seeding times and distances in all four of her events. She has amassed 81 individual points in her three previous state trips including two golds in triple jump and high jump and one gold in long jump. She has silvers in high jump and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

At district, sophomore Carlie Strom added pole vault gold for the Mushers of eighth-year coach Candice Smith. They doubled their number of girls' state qualifiers from last year and will send six in nine events to State 1A Friday and Saturday, May 18-19 in Meridian.

"Our main focus at state is to get some help for Katelyn—a few points from some of the other girls," said coach Smith, whose Musher girls placed sixth at state last year with 38 points, all obtained by Peterson. "We've got a good shot at one of the state trophies."

Meanwhile, the Carey Panther girls won three of the four relays at district and got a 200-meter dash victory by junior McKayla Mecham to capture fourth place with 82 points.

Carey's district champion girls' 4x200-meter relay team featuring Daphne Kirkland, Mecham, Angelica Zarate and Micaela Adamson has the top 1A state seeding time. The Panther medley relay squad, also district champs and the same foursome, is right in the mix with the fourth-best time.

The Carey girls qualified six girls in 10 events for state with Mecham, Daphne Kirkland and Adamson each making it in four events, and junior distance runner Jaide Parke qualifying in three. Parke has the second-best seeding time in the 3200m, third-best at 1600m.

In the district boys' competition won by the Raft River Trojans at Jerome, the Camas County boys (83 points) and Carey boys (70) placed fourth and fifth—Camas sending eight boys in seven events to state and Carey collecting six state boys' tickets in seven events.

Carey senior Charlie Rivera won the triple jump at district 43-9 and has the top state seeding distance by nearly three feet. Also in line for state gold is Camas senior Andrew Simon, the district high jump king at 6-0 and top state seed.

The Musher boys claimed two district relay titles at Jerome. The 4x400m relay squad of Andrew Simon, Airik Donohoe, Davey Knowlton and anchor Cody Lane set a new school record by three seconds (3:37.85) and won their district race by over five seconds. They have the fourth-best state seed.

Donohoe's outstanding 200m split in the sprint medley kickstarted Camas' four-second triumph in that district final at Jerome with teammates Simon, Lane and anchor Knowlton. That Musher team has the second-best state seed at 3:46.41.

Put together for the first time at district, Carey's 4x100m boys' relay of Christian Zarate, Jack Cenarrusa, Charlie Rivera and anchor Dillon Cenarrusa challenged eventual winner Oakley all the way and finished second by the smallest of margins, 46.27 to 46.34. Carey has the third-best state seed in a 4x100m that is anyone's race.

In another photo finish at district, the Carey boys' 4x200m relay of Christian Zarate, Luis Garcia, Rivera and Jack Cenarrusa were second to Raft River, 1:35.91 to 1:36.09. The Panthers own the third-best state seed.

Panther coach Lane Kirkland said, "Both our girls' and boys' teams should score some decent points and hopefully produce some state champions this weekend."

Second-place finishes at district went to Cody Lane of Camas in 400m dash, Jaide Parke of Carey in 800m and 3200m, Davey Knowlton of Camas in 800m, Jack Cenarrusa of Carey in high jump, Jordan Robles of Camas in discus, Micaela Adamson in triple jump and Rivera in long jump.

Another outstanding performer at 1A district was Richfield senior Sasha Kent. She won the 800m by over 14 seconds, took the 1600m by over 16 seconds and captured the 3200m by 19 seconds.

Kent will carry the top times in each distance run to state in an effort to duplicate her 30-point, three gold-medal performance from 2011. She won three silver medals in the same three distance events in 2010.

Besides Kent's 30 points at district, Oakley senior Addie Bedke earned 30.5 points by winning 100m dash and 100m high hurdles, grabbing second in 300m intermediate hurdles and contributing to Oakley's second-place 4x100m relay.

For the boys, Oakley senior Stephan Ortiz was the high-point district male athlete with 28.5 points based on his first places in the 100m dash and long jump, third in high jump and his spot on the first-place Hornet 4x100m relay team.

Murtaugh's junior Troy Baynes (27.5 points) won the 800m and 3200m at district, placed fourth in the 1600m and was a member of the second-place medley relay squad. Murtaugh senior Humberto Pacheco won both hurdle events and was also on the runner-up medley relay team.

At state, trophies are awarded to the championship, runner-up, third and fourth place teams in all classifications. Also, the top six finishers in each event receive medals.

State track spreads to multiple sites

Boise State University's Bronco Stadium won't be used any more for Idaho High School Activities Association state track and field meets.

For this year, the 95th annual Idaho High School Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday, May 18-19 will be spread out in the Treasure Valley at five different high schools, each one hosting one of the five classifications.

Plans call for future state high school track meets to be staged at the 5,000-seat Dora Larsen Park, a multi-use facility on a 14.5-acre site located on the former East Junior High School site in Boise near the corner of Warm Springs Rd. and Broadway.

Construction on the new facility is due to be completed by late August. It will house BSU track and field, and BSU softball, and be used for high school football games in fall.

This year's State 4A meet will be held at Middleton High School. The State 1A meet is at Mountain View High School in Meridian. General admission is $5 per day. At each site, the schedule of events is the same:

Friday, May 18: 3 p.m. field event finals (girls' pole vault, triple jump, discus, and boys' high jump, long jump and shotput); 5 p.m., Parade of Athletes; and 6 p.m., medley relay finals followed by running preliminaries.

Saturday, May 19: 10 a.m. field event finals (girls' high jump, long jump, shotput, and boys' pole vault, triple jump, discus); 1 p.m., running event finals starting with the high hurdles.
