17 off to state

The Community School punched its tickets to the State 3A tennis tournament last Friday at Sun Valley Tennis Club.

Actually, the Cutthroats punched 17 state tickets for placing first, second or third in a state-qualifying tournament.

Coach Chris Gripkey's Cutthroats, winning all five classes and placing 1-2 in four of them, thoroughly dominated the one-day 4th/5th District 3A tournament. The host team qualified 17 of its 18 entrants for the Idaho High School Activities Association State 3A meet Friday and Saturday, May 18-19 at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

Winning the Sun Valley independent school's 14th district championship in 15 years, and seventh straight, the Cutthroats had 164 points for the day—76 singles and 88 doubles.

The Cutthroats defeated second-place Gooding 86 to 31.5 in boys' totals and 78 to 32.5 in the girls' calculations. Sugar-Salem of Sugar City was a distant third with 15 overall points.

Cutthroat sophomore Michael Weaver won his first district boys' singles title 6-3, 6-4 over defending champ Tim Kanellitsas, a Cutthroat senior. Unseeded freshman George Everitt earned his first state trip with a 6-4, 6-4 win for third place.

Boys' doubles winners were senior Hunter Weaver and freshman Willis Sanchez-duPont in straight sets over a Gooding pair. It went down to the wire for Cutthroat juniors Gunnar Ohlson and Zach Lindahl, who captured third with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win.

The home team continued its singles mastery with the 1-2 girls' singles finish of sophomore Chloe Francois and freshman Sydney Hagenbuch. Another 1-2 Sun Valley finish occurred in girls' doubles, with No. 3-seeded juniors Taylor Figge and Ella Marks defeating top-seeded Josie Bunce and Jolie Blair by 6-3, 6-4 scores.

Mixed doubles was just as successful for Gripkey's group. The freshman and sophomore team of Trenor Gould and Chloe Chrysikopoulos, seeded third, held off top-seeded seniors Eric Runkel and Morgan Jones in the 6-1, 7-6 final.

The Cutthroats have plenty of work ahead this weekend to contend with favored Parma and Fruitland at state tennis. Sun Valley players haven't won an individual state title since 2008, and their last state team championship came for the boys in 2009 and 2010.

Fruitland captured its first State 3A girls' title last May, over Parma, and Fruitland's girls knocked off Parma 77 to 64.5 in last week's 3rd District tournament. Parma's boys won their second straight State 3A crown last year, and Parma nipped Fruitland by 3.5 points in last week's 3rd District meet.

Fruitland senior Emily Tesnohlidek will be seeking her first state girls' singles title after placing second in 2011. Fruitland junior Bryce Nattress will try to jump from third to first in boys' singles. Both won their district championships last week.
