Dominant days for WRHS tennis

Great Basin champs again

By JEFF CORDES
Express Staff Writer

Doubles was simply dynamite, yet it was a dominant couple of days overall for Wood River High School tennis teams at the state-qualifying 4th District Great Basin Conference 4A tournament Tuesday and Wednesday in Twin Falls.

Wood River players, sweeping gold in all the doubles categories, captured first places in four of the five contested events at the GBC meet and qualified 12 of its 16 players for the State 4A tournament May 18-19 at Boise Racquet and Swim Club.

The Wolverine girls captured their fifth consecutive GBC district title 62-37 over Twin Falls. The Wood River boys won the district championship for a third straight year 78-41 over Twin Falls. In overall totals, it was Wood River 140-78 over the Twin Falls Bruins—a third straight overall championship and fourth in five years.

Seventh-year Wood River head coach Vicki Johnston said, "I'm so proud of our team. They played some of their best tennis of the season." Indeed, the Hailey doubles teams earned 96 points for the tourney—22 more than last year. And Wood River players won 28 of 37 matches at the meet.

In boys' singles, top-seeded Wood River senior Karl Wilander won his third straight GBC championship 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) over Twin Falls junior Dallas Hunt. In girls' singles, No. 2-seeded junior Lily Richards won two straight-set matches before settling for second place in a 6-1, 6-2 title match loss to defending champion McKenzie Baggett of Canyon Ridge.

Boys' doubles was completely dominant—Wood River's two teams dropping only three games in five match wins before meeting in the final. The champs were seniors Raleigh Grossbaum-Charlie Grabow 6-4, 6-2 over juniors Cole Caminiti and Josh Morell.

Wood River didn't qualify any girls' doubles teams for state last May and still wound up in second place overall to Century of Pocatello by a slim 49-45 margin. This time around, WRHS seniors Sloan Storey and Erin Murphy paired for the first time and won Wednesday's final 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over defending champs Natalie White and Kayla Ash of Twin Falls.

It was another 1-2 finish for Wood River for 36 additional points in mixed doubles. Top-seeded sophomore Stephen Pfeiffer and senior Hannah Baybutt pulled off their 6-1, 6-0 championship match win over unseeded senior-freshman Quentin Dowdle-Haley Cutler.

Other results: Sophomore Chase Hutchinson won three boys' singles matches; junior Margaret Reutter won twice in girls' singles; and the girls' doubles team of Alex Feldman and Alex Taylor captured three match wins.
