Thanks, Mom

Sunday is Mother's Day. It's time, once again, to tip our hats. So, here goes:

Thank-you, Mom, for getting me into the world and giving me the opportunity to live out my destiny. And, while I'm at it, I'd like to acknowledge the quiet, thankless little things you did to enhance my life. For instance, when you stayed up most of the night sewing up the crotch in my baseball uniform pants in the spring of 1958 before the big game, which spared me from derision and humiliation. I got two hits before I sprained my nose on a line drive and was carried off the field in the eighth inning. I survived but, most importantly, so did the crotch sewing job.

Then, there was the time you found the Playboy Magazine under my pillow and placed it on the nightstand and never said a word. And, at the high school prom when you slipped me a few bucks and didn't react when I "tooted" loudly while introducing you to my date. Or, when I got out of the Air Force in 1964 and brought home a wife with a child on the way. You just smiled and welcomed us all into the house without passing judgment.

I'm retired now and could really use a few extra bucks, but where are you now? I'm just kidding, having a laugh. If you were here, you'd be laughing, as well.

It's going to be a good day today because my neighbor said he was going to clean up his yard. If you were here, you'd bake cookies and talk to his Mother.

I'll press on and will be thinking of you this Sunday, Mother's Day.

Nice talking to you.
