Kemp supports Friedman, Slanetz

I attended both Ketchum candidate forums in the week before last, but before I get into my thoughts on the performance of the hopefuls, I want to correct a statement from the audience at the Wednesday gathering.

The statement claimed—or certainly implied—that the city is granting yearly 3 percent pay increases to employees and elected officials. The facts are that over the past four years there were only two pay increases authorized by the City Council—a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment in 2008 and a 2.5 percent adjustment in 2010. (The mayor and council agreed to not accept the 2.5 percent increase.)

In a letter on these pages a month ago, I stated that I was impressed by the strong field of candidates running for a seat on the council and my view has not changed.

During the recent forums, the candidates, as a group, performed well. After consideration of my notes and recollections from those two evenings and other input, I have decided to support Charles Friedman and Jim Slanetz.

I feel they offer the best combination of knowledge, curiosity, thoughtfulness and enthusiasm that the job deserves.
