Softball sweep sends WRHS into tourney

Wolverines take care of Bobcats in GBC

Its best offensive showing of the 2012 season this week sent the Wood River High School softball team into the upcoming Great Basin Conference tournament with a head of steam.

Wood River (9-13, 6-9 league) swept the winless Burley Bobcats (0-22, 0-15) by scores of 15-4, 9-7 and 16-2 on Tuesday and Wednesday to nail down the fourth seed for the six-school GBC tournament beginning Saturday, May 5 in Twin Falls.

Coach Dale Martin's Wolverines out-hit Burley 41-21 over three games led by hot-hitting left fielder Devan Atkinson (8-for-12, 7 runs, 9 RBI, 2 HR), center fielder Haylee Thompson (6-for-13, 7 runs, 8 RBI, 3 HR, 2 doubles) and second baseman Cassidy Cooper (5 hits, 7 RBI).

Tuesday's "Senior Day" game honoring Atkinson, Thompson, Kaitana Martinez and Maddie McInnis was deadlocked 4-4 until Thompson opened Wood River's 11-run fifth inning with a massive solo homer—her first career round tripper. Atkinson added a three-run double in the frame.

Another big uprising, this time an eight-run fourth, propelled the Wolverines to their 9-7 victory in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Burley behind a fine seven-hit, complete-game pitching job by Favi Ruiz (4 K, 8 BB, 12 LOB).

Seven of the nine Wolverine hitters contributed to the 11-hit attack led by Atkinson (3 hits), Brittney Bradley (2 hits, double, 2 RBI) and Kori Paradis (2 hits). Sydney Tidwell (6-for-11 for the 3-game series) hammered a two-run double.

In Wednesday's nightcap, pitcher Bradley (7-10) was in fine form. She allowed only five hits and walked only one, while her defense came up with a solid performance (1 error). Again, the Wolverines had big innings—two six-run rallies.

The 14-hit Hailey attack in just five frames featured four hits and two homers by Thompson (5 RBI), plus two homers and three hits off the bat of Atkinson (5 RBI). Cooper added a three-run double, Ashley Hicks chipped in with two hits and junior Rachel Conover clouted a two-run homer.

Wood River plays No. 5-seeded Minico (6-14, 4-11) on Saturday at noon at Twin Falls High School. The winner will meet top-seeded Twin Falls (18-3, 13-2) at 2 p.m. as the double elimination tourney continues.
