Teacher contract negotiations start Friday

State law allows public attendance at labor discussions

Express Staff Writer

The Blaine County School District has scheduled salary and benefit negotiations to begin Friday with the Blaine County Education Association, commonly referred to as the "teachers union."

According to the meeting notice, discussions will last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A second negotiation session is set for Monday, May 7, with discussions also scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Once an agreement is reached, it is subject to approval by the district board of trustees and the teachers union.

Because of new state law passed in 2011, the meetings are open to the public. Prior to last year, negotiations were held in private with no notice provided to either the news media or the public.

The meetings will be held at the district office at 118 W. Bullion St. in Hailey.

After going two years without cost-of-living raises, the district and the teachers union last year negotiated a 2 percent across-the-board salary increase. The district applied the increase to all district employees.
