From clay to Zen at art camps

From clay to Zen, Ketchum art camps have something for everyone's budding talent.

At Boulder Mountain Clayworks, there are two sets of camps.

l "Back to the Future" is for ages 7-12. Taught by Beth Bundy and Keith Moses, these camps are $135 per session with sessions running July 9-13, July 16-20, July 23-27, July 30-Aug. 3 and Aug. 6-10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

l "Teenage Throwing" is for the older set. Middle schoolers will work with Lauren Street and beginners are eligible for time at the wheel July 23-27 and Aug. 6-10. More intermediate claymators, classes are offered July 30-Aug. 3 from 1:30-4 p.m. Tuition is $150.

l For family taking time off, there are "Family Clay Afternoons" July 17 and Aug. 14, both from 1:30-3 p.m.

Camps for this and that

Petite Picasso in Ketchum has an array of short-running classes starting with culinary camp for kids 8-12, June 19-21. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids will work with fondant, jar cakes, cake pops with an emphasis on baking trends from TV and the catering world. Fee is $150.

l Kids ages 9-12 learn more about Native American art from July 9-12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cara Douglas covers leather pouches, dream catchers, totems, feather hair clips and sage smudge sticks. Fee is $175.

l Zoey Pierce leads "Japanese Art Camp" for kids ages 6-12, July 16-19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will explore origami, floating ink on water, tea cups for a traditional tea ceremony, printmaking and scroll making. Fee is $175.

l Yoga, eco art and tribal dot painting are what's in store for Zen camp, for ages 8-12, July 23-26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each day will be in perfect balance with a yoga and meditative start led by Hans Mukh Khalsa. Fee is $195.

l Six-12-year-olds can enjoy "Mother Nature Camp" July 30-Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will experiment with mixed media in the most natural form using found objects to create artworks with the help of Cara Drougas.

l Local furniture craftsman Wes Walsworth teaches kids woodworking basics from making birdhouses, willow furniture and frames from reclaimed wood. The class is held Aug. 14-16 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. for ages 8-14 and costs $195.

· Unleash your inner fashionista with "80's Fashion and Music Camp." There will also be music instruction with Mitzi Metcham and a rockstar performance at the end. This camp is the longest offered at five days. Kids 8-14 are invited to the camp Aug. 20-24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This costs $225.
