From the pulpit to the people

St. Thomas Playhouse camps

St. Thomas Church in Ketchum has long been a hub of community activity of all makes and models. So adding a theatrical playhouse element was a natural extension.

The kids camp is one of the few that gears up just as soon as school lets out for summer.

St. Thomas Playhouse is offering its outstanding "Company B Performing Arts Day Camp" for kids ages 4-13 right after school is dismissed—Monday, June 11 through Saturday, June 23.

The younger set, 4-7 years, attends from 9 a.m. to noon, and youth from 8-13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. First week is held at St. Thomas, and second week at the Community School. Costs run from $350 to $475.

The playhouse enlists a professional team of theater and music instructors to teach the campers acting, singing, movement and choreography. It culminates in one big show, "Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr.," on June 21-23 at the Community School Theater in Sun Valley for 2 p.m. matinees.

For parents seeking a longer day for their kids, there is also "Company B Club" afternoon day care until 3 p.m. It is offered for the younger children, ages 4-7.

For youth ages 10-18 (entering grades 5-12), the "Summer Performing Arts Conservatory Camp" or SPACC is an ideal opportunity for more in-depth study and fun.

The sleep-away camp is held at beautiful Camp Perkins in the Sawtooth Mountains from June 25-30. Three outstanding guest artists from around the country, along with local professionals, teach the campers acting, singing, film, dancing, and rock band.

Afternoons are reserved for outdoor activities around the lake, and arts and crafts. Early-bird cost is $850 before May 1. Scholarships are available.

For SPACC students, there is a special full tuition scholarship in memory of Sarah Adicoff. This scholarship is awarded to an exceptional high school student so they can attend SPACC. Sarah was a bright light on and off the stage. She lost a five-year battle with cancer in Jan. 2011.

Scholarships are available through the H. Edward Bilkey Memorial Fund for Company B & SPACC.

Contact Sara Gorby for more information about the camp and scholarships at 726-5349 ext. 16.
