Public invited to theater unveiling

Festivities set for April 25 at Community Campus

Express Staff Writer

The public will get a chance to see how $1.54 million in tax dollars was spent at the unveiling of the new Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater on Wednesday, April 25, at the Community Campus in Hailey.

The theater is an extensive remodel of the old auditorium at the Community Campus, which is owned by the Blaine County School District. The school board approved the work in 2011 and it was completed this spring. Funding was through a 10-year, $59.8 million plant facilities levy approved by county voters in 2009.

Festivities for the unveiling are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. with an open house and tours of Community Campus tenant facilities, including those of the Blaine County Recreation District, Footlight Dance Center, College of Southern Idaho, Head Start and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

The theater opens at 6:30 p.m. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for 7 p.m., followed by performances by the Wood River High School band, mixed choir, drama department and orchestra.

The remodel involved installing new carpet and seats, building a lobby area, adding catwalks for access to lighting systems, installing an orchestra pit, improving stage access, building makeup and dressing rooms and installing new sound and lighting systems.

The theater, which will be used by both student and public performing arts organizations, is now the largest indoor performing arts facility in Blaine County.
