Mountain bikers show their bark

Barking Spider races debut Wild Rockies


About 25 Wood River Valley mountain bike racers ventured south of Nampa to Murphy Saturday, April 14 for the 17th annual Barking Spider mountain bike race. The first Wild Rockies racing series event of 2012 was a qualifier for national fat tire championships in July at Sun Valley resort.

Racing took place on a 9.2-mile course with Pros and Category 1 racers going about 28 miles, Category 2 racers about 18 miles and Category 1 bikers about nine miles.

Local podium placers in their classes included Rebecca Rusch, Janelle Conners, Sara Schroeder, Cameron King, Andy Andrews, Kendall Lutz and Nancy Glick.

Among Pro Women, Rusch (2.08:22) was second only to Boise's Jana Repulski (2.04:19) over 28 miles.

Pro Men winner Cary Smith of Jackson Hole, Wyo. (1.46:26) was a minute faster than Shawn Mitchell of Boise (1.47:48). Sun Valley's Dave Harrison (1.59:29) finished fifth.

Singlespeed placers on the long course were: 4—Michael Shane 2.04:09. 8—Kyle Rafford 2.07:02. 11—Lee Roquet 2.13:34. 13—Pat Schott 2.22:39.

In the 10-kilometer mountain run, Ketchum's Amy Brazil (45:01) finished first in the 30-39 women's class and second overall of all runners.

Local Category 1/2/3 finishers with overall placings, name, time and class finishes:

Category 1 (52 racers): 1—Jason Jablonski (Wenatchee, Wash.) 1.51:19. 14—Scott Robinson 1.59:43 (6th 40-49). 24—Joel Brazil 2.06:07 (12th 40-49). 35—Chris Gardner 2.13:09 (5th 50-plus). 46—Marc Driver 2.23:08 (16th 40-49). 47—Janelle Conners 2.25:31 (2nd 40-plus, 5th woman). 49—Sara Schroeder 2.35:13 (2nd 19-29, 7th woman). 52—Cameron King 2.48:37 (3rd 40-plus, 9th woman).

Category 2 (85 racers): 22—Bill McCann 1.25:59 (5th 40-49). 42—Jeff Roth 1.32:29 (15th 40-49). 43—Joel Zellers 1.32:38 (16th 40-49). 47—Josh Glick 1.33:43 (18th 40-49). 51—Tony Buoncristiani 1.36:45 (20th 40-49). 65—Chris O'Donnell 1.42:49 (25th 40-49). 73—Andy Andrews 1.49:40 (1st 60-plus). 83—Justin Wagstaff 1.57:15 (12th 35-39).

Category 3 (58 racers): 44—Kendall Lutz 1.03:10 (2nd 40-plus, 10th woman). 51—Nancy Glick 1.08:51 (3rd 40-plus, 12th woman). 57—Jeffery Lyon 1.37:48 (8th 40-49). 58—Zane Lyon 1.37:49 (8th 14-under).
