WRHS tennis adds wins over ‘Hawks, Senators

Success on the road

With a few varsity players out, the visiting Wood River High School tennis team was still able to post 10-2 and 11-1 wins over the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks and Gooding Senators Tuesday in Twin Falls.

Coach Vicki Johnston's Wolverines improved their dual meet record to 5-3 and their Great Basin Conference league mark to 3-0. In its current four-meet win streak, Wood River has a 77-13 advantage in sets won and 41-7 edge in successful match results.

Senior Karl Wilander, the reigning Great Basin Conference boys' singles king and last year's State 4A runner-up, breezed to 6-0, 6-0 wins in his two No. 1 boys' singles matches on the Canyon Ridge courts.

The No. 1 boys' doubles pairing of Josh Morell and Cole Caminiti peeled off two victories including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of a Canyon Ridge duo.

At No. 2 girls' singles, Wood River senior Sloan Storey prevailed 7-3 in a first-set tiebreaker and went on to record a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Staci Baird of Canyon Ridge. Junior varsity boys' doubles players Drew Morse and Ty Reinemann won at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1.

Solid, aggressive net play was Wood River's focus and strength all day Tuesday, according to the coaching staff.

The Wolverines entertained the Minico Spartans Thursday, April 5 for their first home matches of the season, then it's off to Burley on Tuesday, April 10 where Wood River will complete its first round of Great Basin league play this spring.
