Josey is top Yank at Junior Worlds

Halfpipe in Spain

Chase Josey in Spain

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation rider Chase Josey, 17, of Hailey was the top American and claimed fourth place in snowboard halfpipe at the 2012 Junior World Championships at Sierra Nevada, Spain on Tuesday, March 27.

Andy Gilbert, SVSEF Snowboard Director and a coach for the U.S. at Junior Worlds, said, "This is a huge result that counts Chase among the best juniors in the world. Qualifying for this event is a big step in any rider's progression, but to be just points from the podium on your first big trip abroad is awesome."

First in his heat and tied for second overall with 85 points in qualifying rounds, Josey led a contingent of four Americans into the finals. He finished fourth overall with a total of 79 points—one point out of third.

With the pressure on after falling on his first pass, his run consisted of a front 9, back 9, front 10, cab 7, air to fakie.

"Obviously, I wanted to podium, but I still think fourth is a really good spot for me," Josey said. "I was nervous for my first run and fell. For my second run I calmed my nerves and put together a much better run and stuck it."

The event was won by Tim-Kevin Ravnjak of Slovenia with 90 points. After Josey, the next best American was Joe Mensch in 11th place.

Josey, a Community School junior, enjoyed his experience at Junior Worlds. It is the first time he has qualified for the international competition, which matches the best junior competitors in the world.
