Spring is finally in the air, which means the newest issue of Habitat magazine is on the streets.

The sister magazine to the Sun Valley Guide (published by Express Publishing), Habitat is a home, garden and lifestyle magazine with a strong focus on promoting sustainable living.

In this issue, read about a game changer in green building: The Passive House movement, imported from Europe, aims to drastically slash reliance on fossil fuels, cutting a home's dependence on these fast-dwindling resources by up to 90 percent.

An essay by architect and local "green" hero Dale Bates reveals the most important step that local residents can take down the path of a sustainable lifestyle. An investigation into the health benefits of locally raised meat explains why the source of food affects its value to the consumer.

Getting to know food increasingly means getting to know the people who make it, and Habitat features a regular section called "Faces Behind the Food" that profiles local food producers. This edition introduces Dan Freeman and Carol Murphy of Shooting Star Farm in Hailey. A Farm to Table Marketplace also presents a selection of the area's producers.

Inside the home, discover an array of new, eco-friendly gadgets that help make a home stylish and sustainable, and follow three kitchen remodels that kept the planet in mind while creating perfect spaces for family life.

Also, meet the McCarvers, a Hailey family that embarked on a patriotic experiment by purchasing only products made in America for one year. Learn about the challenges and benefits they faced.

Finally, 2012 sees the launch of Habitat's inaugural SustainIt Awards. These accolades, voted on by the public, reward local businesses and environmental advocates for their commitment to shaping a greener planet. The winners are revealed inside the magazine.

The 2012 Habitat magazine is on newsstands now, or call 726-8060 for a copy. To receive all issues of the Sun Valley Guide and Habitat magazines, subscribe at www.svguide.com/subs.
