Masters earn podiums at Park City

At national finals

Over 200 of the country's best Masters alpine ski racers invaded Park City, Utah last week for the 2012 USSA Alpine Masters Championships presented by Skier's Edge.

This year's nationals were a four-event championships. The opening Super Combined March 19 led into the traditional three-event nationals with super giant slalom, giant slalom and slalom March 21-23.

Super Combined results were included in the Divisions Cup scoring for the first time—the Eastern Division winning the crown—while the combined age class champions were scored as always on the basis of super G, giant slalom and slalom results at nationals.

Masters racers from Sun Valley distinguished themselves throughout the week and came away with several combined gold medals. Competitors were grouped into Group A (men 21-44, classes 1-4), Group B (men 45-59, classes 5-7), Group C (all women) and Group D (men 60-plus, 8-14).

Winning Group C combined golds were Class 12 (ages 80-84) Virginia Reed, a three-event champ, and Class 10 (70-74) Anna Droege, who captured the SG and GS races. Not far behind Droege in Class 10 was combined silver medalist Nancy Auseklis, winner of Friday's slalom finale.

Rosemary Moschel in Class 8 (60-64) took the SG and SL titles and won the combined gold medal. A bronze medalist in SG, Sun Valley's Heather Black just missed the Class 5 (45-49) podium with a combined fourth place.

In Group D, Keith Thompson won SG and GS and earned the Class 10 (70-74) combined gold. Impressive in Class 11 (75-79) was the bronze medal combined finish of Carl Fullman, who won silver in SG and SL. Drury Cooper in Class 12 (80-84) also pulled out a combined bronze with consistent SG/GS/SL placings of fifth, fifth and fourth.

Steve Slivinski placed seventh in Class 10 combined and Frank Ward eighth. Also competing in Group D were Ned Lumpkin (13th GS Class 10), Bob Sarchett (7th GS Class 9) and Jackson Allred (11th SL Class 8).

In Group B, Cliff Cunha climbed all the way to the bronze medal in Class 7 (55-59) with 7th SG, 5th SL and 4th GS. In the hotly competitive Group A, Tyler Chandler of Class 1 (21-29) won the slalom and giant slalom in convincing fashion but didn't compete in the Super G.

Super combined class placings: 1—Virginia Reed and Nancy Auseklis. 2—Anna Droege, Rosemary Moschel and Cliff Cunha. 3—Carl Fullman. 4—Drury Cooper. 6—Steve Slivinski. 7—Frank Ward. 11—Bob Sarchett.
