Parrish brings out the best to Baldy

Moguls and speed in locals’ races

Having originated on Baldy in 1992, the Lane Parrish Memorial Combined race marked its 21st edition with two races at Sun Valley last weekend.

The event designed for locals that celebrates the end of the season benefits the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) Freestyle team and Soldier Mountain Downhill.

The 2012 Parrish attracted 130 entries for Friday's mogul contest on Upper River Run—first time it has been held there—and Sunday's super giant slalom on Greyhawk.

"The weather the last couple of years has allowed us to decide the mogul venue at the final hour," said SVSEF Freestyle program director Andy Ware. "Competitors were really excited to be competing on Upper River this year."

Brody Buchwalter, 13, held off veteran competitor Olin Glenne, 37, to win the overall mogul title in the men's division. Katrina Harmon, 48, mother of freestyle team members Blake and Giselle Harmon, won the women's title.

Sunday's Super G titles went to 14-year-old Haley Cutler (68.03 seconds) and to recent Jackson Town Downhill runner-up Miles Fink-Debray (59.68) over Town Downhill winner Carl Rixon Jr. (60.93). SVSEF alpine coach Pat Savaria set the course.

This year's combined champions were 10-year-old Lily Fitzgerald for the women and Brett Deuter, 39, for the men.

Deuter was tied with Brody Buchwalter after the two events. The tie was broken by an arm wrestle match in front of hundreds who showed up for the Lane Parrish celebration and awards party at Apples.

Ware said, "Once again it took a community of skiers to pull off the event. There were thousands of dollars of prizes donated from local businesses and Monster Energy Drink. Thank you to everyone involved this year."

Donating prizes were Andy Ware, Scott USA, Smith Optics, Sturtevants, Sun Valley Co., Panache, Paul Kenny's, Formula Sports, SVSEF, Ketchum Grill, Press print and Jeff Page.

Parrish was a speed and bump skier and movie stuntman who died at 33 in a plane crash near Twin Falls in 1990.
