Fall into Miriams Well

Then catch the next wave to Donavon Frankenreiter

By JENNIFER LIEBRUM

Miriams Well promises to take you back to the days of rock gold, when rock was raw, powerful and unprocessed. They will bring their unique blend of rock and soul to Sun Valley Brewery, Friday, March 23, at 8 p.m. and all ages are invited to enjoy this free show in Hailey.

As one fan wrote of the experience, "Mir (German) is Joplinesque. Miriams Well could easily have happened in the sixties ... it's funky, soul-infused acid blues rock. Whatever you call it, it's damn entertaining. 'Nuff said. Their show was amazing!"

Singer and songwriter Mir German and partner Mark Bowden, co-writer/producer/guitarist are an inseparable team of melody and groove. Miriams Well is their vision combined.

Mir has performed at clubs and festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada has shared stages with Shawn Colvin, Carlene Carter, Spencer Davis, Taj Mahal, and Curtis Salgado to name just a few.

Her first record "The New York Sessions" features guest appearances by bassist Brad Houser (Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians), drummer Eric Parker (Bonnie Raitt/Joe Cocker) and guitarist Adam Widoff (Lenny Kravitz).

According to his webpage bio, California dreamer Donavon Frankenreiter was 10 years old when he got his first surfboard, 16 when he picked up his first guitar.

The twin obsessions have been mercifully melded over the years carrying around the globe from stage to surf and gathering fans and friends and collaborators like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper along the way.

With the release of his fourth album, "Glow," one might think Frankenreiter has refined his act, but as he heads to play at Whiskey Jacques' in Ketchum on Tuesday, March 27, the 37-year-old says he'll simply take the plunge as usual.

"We don't have a set show. If we did, I would go crazy," he said. "You never know what's going to happen. I love that element of surprise with music and surfing—you never catch the same wave twice."

Growing up in Southern California, Frankenreiter was drawn first to guitar gods like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, then to songwriters like Bob Dylan and Bob Marley. Ska-punk soundtracked his moves in surfing films, but his first high school band was so inspired by Pearl Jam.

Out on his own, living with his wife and kids in Hawaii, "I've really enjoyed living in the moment.

"If there's anything I learned, it's that you really gotta be yourself," he says, reflecting on his career. "You can't fool people in music if you want to stick around for a long time."
