Vocal minority ruled debate on sidecountry

We have all followed the debate regarding guiding of the sidecountry off Bald Mountain, and a contentious debate it has been. But we want to speak out in support of Sun Valley Trekking.

Sun Valley Trekking, which withdrew its portion of the permit application, is an amazing company that has grown into a first-class hut system that attracts people from all over the country to our backcountry and community. It provides excellent avalanche courses, guided backcountry skiing and mountain bike adventures. It is a true advocate, teacher and example of what a "real" steward of the backcountry is.

It is unfortunate that the debate grew ugly and personal, while the supposed "open forum" blog for comment turned into a negative propaganda tool. Sun Valley Trekking, in keeping with its personal code, chose to withdraw in favor of keeping harmony in the community rather than expand its business opportunities.

The few days that Sun Valley Trekking might have guided clients would have been on routes that were far from the usual sidecountry routes, not ending up at easily accessed trailheads or roads. Their motive was far from profit but rather to enhance the experience of the many individuals who have expressed interest in exploring and learning about the off-piste opportunities in our valley.

We maintain that Sun Valley Trekking would still be a great resource for sidecountry guiding. The final decision reflects the views of a few individuals rather than the larger community. We were in favor of the sidecountry proposal but did not organize and speak loudly. Seems like only the opposition spoke out, but many were in favor and were a more silent voice. Shame on us!
