Spring athletes get outside for first contests

Swanson sets school discus record

Swanson sets school discus record

Three-sport Wood River High School athlete Cheyenne Swanson started her 2012 track season Friday exactly the way she ended the 2011 cinder campaign—with a nice, long discus toss to win the event.

Swanson, a six-foot senior who is the two-time State 4A discus champion, broke her own school record by five inches with a 116-4 personal-best toss in winning the event during Friday's Twin Falls Invitational track and field meet.

Having played an important role for Wood River's state tournament soccer and girls' basketball teams this year, Swanson started strong after winning the state discus in 115-9 last year and 115-11 in 2010.

So far, this year's top Idaho girls' discus throw was made by Coeur d'Alene senior Madison Seaman, at 125-6. She won the State 5A discus title last year at 121-4. Overall Idaho state meet record is 154-4 set by Leadore's Holly Tyler in 2001.

There were other top results for Wood River's skeleton crew of 21 boys and girls.

Starting her first Wolverine track season, sophomore Haley Montgomery won the 1600-meter run in 5:50.6 and added the 3200m victory in 12:51. And junior Ian Keys captured the 100m dash (10.93) and the 200m (a personal-best 22.70).

Ben Stout, a senior, was second in the 800m (2:02.72) and third in the 1600m (4:42.0). Also placing for Wood River: 2—Corrine Smith 800m and 1600m. 3—Kenya Schott 800m. 4—Chase England 3200m and Swanson shotput. 5—Schott 400m and England 1600m.

Fairfield's Camas County High School had a good day, with senior Andrew Simon winning the high jump at 5-10 and junior Jordon Robles placing second in the shotput, 40-0, and second in discus, 123-7.

Bulldogs hold off WRHS 9-7

You can't commit errors and expect to win against a quality softball program like the one at Kimberly High School. That was Wood River High's main problem during Thursday's 9-7 non-league loss at Kimberly.

Wood River (1-2) made five errors and yielded four unearned runs—spotting the Bulldogs an 8-2 lead after four frames. The Wolverines (7 hits) rallied for five runs to make the game close as freshman pitcher Britney Bradley shut Kimberly down the last two innings.

The Wolverines put the potential tying runs on base in the seventh before the 'Dogs recorded the final out.

Kimberly's softball program won three State 3A championships in four years ending in 2010, and then placed third with a 21-5 record at state last year. The Bulldogs (3-0) have scored 38 runs in three wins so far.

Senior Devan Atkinson blasted a long two-run homer giving Wood River an early 2-0 lead in Thursday's game. Kori Paradis (2 hits, 2 RBI), Sydney Tidwell (2 runs), Bradley (double) and Favi Ruiz (2 RBI) were other contributors at the plate.

Wood River debuts its Great Basin Conference campaign Thursday, March 22 in Twin Falls at last year's GBC regular-season champ Canyon Ridge (2-0). The Riverhawks, 20-5 last spring, opened their season Friday with dominating 13-3 and 13-1 home victories over Madison of Rexburg.

Tennis squad tested in eastern Idaho

Wood River High School's tennis team traveled to Blackfoot last Thursday for a triangular meet with Blackfoot (a 7-5 loss) and Century of Pocatello (an 8-3 setback).

Senior Raleigh Grossbaum had the tough No. 1 singles assignment against Century of playing two-time defending State 4A boys' singles king Josh Goodwin. Grossbaum played crafty tennis and carved out a 6-2 second-set win. But Goodwin prevailed 6-0, 2-6, 6-1.

In No. 3 girls' singles against Century, Alex Feldman won the "marathon award" for her three-set match that ended in a third-set tiebreaker. Spectators commented on Feldman's composure. Rachel Van Dyke nipped her 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.

Winning two matches were Stephen Pfeiffer No. 2 singles and Quentin Dowdle-Erin Murphy at No. 1 mixed doubles.
