Some considered Wood River High School 6-1 senior post Haylee Thompson the best player in last month's State High School Girls' Basketball Tournament in the Boise area.

On a bittersweet evening, Thompson showed her heart and talent Saturday going against Idaho's best during the ninth annual "Battle between North and South" 2012 Idaho High School All-Star game on Rolly Williams court at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene.

Not a starter, indeed, selected as an alternate for the 14-player South squad, Utah State-bound Thompson came off the bench to score a game-high 28 points in the South's 106-78 victory over the North All-Stars.

Voted the game's Most Valuable Player, Thompson was motivated to step up by something everybody wished would never have happened.

Her Wood River and Idaho All-Star teammate, senior guard Kaitana Martinez, suffered a torn ACL injury in her left knee four minutes into the game. Floor general "KT" was a South starter and scored two points before being injured.

Martinez, committed to Dartmouth College, had torn her right knee's ACL last July 21 during a summer league basketball game in Oregon. She rehabilitated and, along with Thompson, led the Wolverines to another state tourney trip.

Thompson and Martinez had also played together leading the East All-Stars to a 104-66 win over the West in the District 4 Senior All-Star game March 8 at Twin Falls High School. Thompson had 18 points, Martinez 9 and Carey's Micaela Adamson 8 in that East effort.

Both Thompson and Martinez are members of the Wood River softball team this spring. Martinez is expected to have surgery on her left knee, go through another rehabilitation and attend Dartmouth on schedule in the fall of 2012.
