Public invited to cancer-research forum

Leading scientists, researchers in Sun Valley

Doctors, scientists and clinical investigators are in Sun Valley this week to share breast cancer information among themselves as well as with the public.

The 16th annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium, "The Metastatic Process and Novel Opportunities for Breast Cancer Research," is sponsored and organized by Ketchum-based Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research. The symposium is an invitation-only conference that allows for the free exchange of breast cancer research and ideas.

The public portion of the symposium is a free, open forum on Thursday, sponsored by St. Luke's Wood River Foundation. This year's topic is "Novel Opportunities for Breast Cancer Therapy."

Speakers are Dr. C. Kent Osborne, director of the Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine, and Dr. Lisa A. Carey, breast cancer hematology/oncology professor in the Lineberger Comprehensive Center of the University of North Carolina.

The public can hear about the latest in breast cancer therapy and have breast-cancer related questions answered.

Though breast cancer is a focus of the symposium, the research and findings presented will pertain to other cancers as well.

"The progress investigators have made in breast cancer research has translated to improved treatment options for many, many other kinds of cancers," said Suzanne Pere-Mulenos, chair of Expedition Inspiration's board of directors.

Expedition Inspiration board member Dr. Kimberly Allison said the symposium is a unique and valuable event.

"It is a powerful event because of its singular focus on sharing ideas to move the field forward," she said in a news release. "There is nothing quite like it, and it exists because of Expedition Inspiration's mission and supporters."

The open forum will take place March 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Sun Valley Inn's Continental Room. No registration is required.
