Mayor nominates Helzel’s replacement

Charles Friedman up for council confirmation Monday

A young banking professional is Mayor Randy Hall's choice to replace Ketchum City Councilman Larry Helzel for the remainder of Helzel's term.

Hall said he will nominate Charles Friedman to the council during a meeting Monday, March 5. If the council approves Hall's recommendation, Friedman will take his seat immediately.

Hall said he selected Friedman, a commercial and small-business lender at Zions First National Bank, in part because Friedman has been involving himself in the community.

"He's been participating in the comprehensive plan process, he's been going to town hall meetings. I can tell he really cares about this community," Hall said. "He's involved."

Additionally, Friedman, 35, is part of an age group that Hall says is not well represented in local government.

"We need to start recruiting these young professionals to be the next generation of leaders," he said.

Hall said Friedman's professional experience would be valuable on the council.

"With his banking background I think he's really well-suited to this appointment," he said.

Hall said he hadn't planned to name a replacement for Helzel, who stepped down on Feb. 29. But with possible council member absences at upcoming meetings, he said he needed to ensure quorums. Friedman's participation also got his attention.

If confirmed by the council, Friedman will serve until the May 15 special election. Two seats are up for a vote that day.

Friedman said he wants to get a feel for the process, the position and the responsibilities before deciding if he will run for the seat.

"I haven't sat on that side of the table yet," he said.
