Sun Valley LOT sees modest increase

December sales activity up 8 percent

By REBECCA MEANY

The holidays were reasonably good to businesses in Sun Valley, at least according to local-option tax receipts.

Activity in Sun Valley in December was 8 percent higher than the same month the year before, with all reporting categories showing increases.

The total LOT receipts collected in December were $114,930.

Sun Valley collects a 3 percent sales tax on lodging, by-the-glass liquor sales and event tickets, a 2 percent tax on most retail sales, and a 1 percent tax on ski-lift tickets and season passes.

The biggest gain was in liquor sales receipts, which posted a 16 percent increase, or $1,134, over December 2010. That category's year-to-date receipts are 10 percent higher than last year at this time.

Lodging also came in strong, with a 12 percent increase, or $4,509 over the previous December. Lodging receipts are up 7 percent so far this fiscal year compared with the same period last fiscal year.

Retail, the biggest category, came in on the positive side, but only with a 5 percent, or $3,097, increase. That category is down 8 percent so far this fiscal year.

November's activity was 36 percent higher than the year before. October, the first month of the fiscal year, posted a 34 percent decline over October 2010.

Fiscal year-to-date figures show a 2 percent drop in LOT collections over the same period last year.
